A very special school

I want to share with you a very interesting experience I had last week. I observed a fourth grade double lesson at Eitan School. Eitan School is a special elementary  school which has a language immersion program. The school is situated in my neighborhood Armon Hanatsiv. Each student gets 10 hours of English learning lessons a week. Four hours of English language is taught and there is  .usually an additional subject taught in English such as science or math
When I entered the classroom the first thing I noticed was that there were two teachers, Leah and Tamar. I also noticed how the class was divided into four groups according to level, for this reason the number of students per group differed. Each teacher was in charge of two groups. I sat next to Tamar, therefore I watched her specifically. There was a group of three strong English Speakers who read the same book for about twenty minutes, while Tamar worked with the weaker group, which was a group of eight Students. They worked with vocabulary for their next story to be learned. After the break, Tamar worked with the English Speakers while the others did worksheets  about the vocabulary they have learned. Tamar is in charge of eleven pupils every English hour.
I was impressed by the fact that almost each child was participating. This could be because each student received the assignment to their level. The teachers kept them busy for the entire lesson.
There wasn't a typical quiet classroom environment and the teachers were constantly on their feet, working with each group. However, |I felt this learning style was very interesting and different.

English Music when I was in elementary school, my sister often listened to English songs. We all enjoyed it though I especially loved David Bowie's music. I used to listen to his music at every opportunity that I had and wanted to understand every single word in English that appeared in the songs. I fell in love with the language and started to explore it throughout my childhood. Today, when I teach english, I always tell my pupils to listen and enjoy English songs, to search for words that they don't know and even play the songs again and again and sing along. I am proud to say that they share with me their favorite songs, bring them to class and listem to them during their breaks. I must also remark that my love to music has passed to all my children and they listen to English music on a regular basis. As a result, they all have a wonderful vocabulary, they speak fluently and they spread their love for English music everywhere.

HOW I DECIDED TO BECOME A TEACHER I was born in Moscow. At the age of seven I entered a regular elementary/secondary school. When we were in the 4th grade our administration decided to change the status of the school. So, it became a Special English school. My parents had to make a decision whether to continue or to change the school, my father knew German, my mother - French. And my grandmother spoke Yiddish. Nobody knew English, we didn't have any digital tools at that time, they were afraid that they would not be able to help me. But I was an excellent pupil and they decided to take a risk and rely on me and the teachers who persuaded them to let me stay. It was a hard school period because we had to pass the programme of three years in one year. But we succeeded. Our young English teachers were so nice, so professional, the lessons were so interesting that I fell in love with English and with a profession. At the age of 11 I had no doubt that I would become a teacher.

Homogeneous Cllassrooms

  Teachers are well aware of the challenges and hardships in trying teach a class of verious level of understanding and skills It is especially hard to teach a language to a class where different  .students have mastered the language at different level       Take, for example, an average fourth grade class: some kids    are reading fluently, some are saying  .full sentences in English and some barely recognize the A B C 's The kids who are struggling and cannot follow the lesson tend to disrupt  the class, which makes it hard to teach the brighter, motivated students To deal with this problem my school has instituted a system problem to minimize this phenomena In the younger grade when we first introduce our students to the English language and to the basics of reading we have two teachers simultaneously in the classroom One teacher teaches the majority of the students while the second teacher focuses on the weaker students There is also a lot of interactive lea
