Escaping Destiny

I have always known that I would be a teacher. People around me have always thought I should choose
this path. The problem is that when people put tags on me, I immediately tend to rebel against them.
I did not want to fulfill other people's expectations.

During my studies, I have taught in junior high school and high school. Later on, I worked as a teaching assistant and as a Hebrew teacher for overseas students. However, I kept feeling that I was missing something and that this type of job was too conventional for me. I had bigger dreams. I was looking for excitement and wanted to do something meaningful. The idea was to make a difference and not to be dragged into a bourgeois life.

As I grew up in a home where political discussions have been a part of my daily life, I ended up working
in the jungle of Israeli politics. After several years, I realized that although there might have been
excitement in my life, my work didn’t have any real impact, except for taking care of personal careers.
It was a long battle field with all kinds of campaigns and elections in which I have not believed anymore.

To make a long story short, I continued doing other things that seemed to me influential and interesting
at the time. For example, I started writing in a newspaper and soon noticed that print journalism was
going through a huge crisis. Additionally, I learnt that I hated dealing with anything related to money or
financial decisions.

It took quite a bit of time to understand that the biggest difference I had ever made was in the
classroom.  That is how I got back to teaching. I found out that a lot had changed since I left. Adjusting
has not been an easy process and that is an understatement.

In conclusion, my mother used to say that wisdom comes in old age. On the other hand, Indians believe
that you are born with a destiny that you should not try to escape. Maybe both of them were right.
What do you think?

  1. Agree with the Indians belief and must add that the best teachers are the ones that are happy with their destiny.

  2. Contentment rather than complacency, wisdom rather than rebellion, listening rather than speaking🌷

    2. Your life experience has given you wisdom and direction in life to know what you want and do not want. Every life experience has something positive to learn from. It up to us to see it or not.

  3. I do believe in destiny, however, I think that we can rewrite it ;-)

  4. I never had a dream of being teacher. More than that. Being a normal quiet student, a typical "good girl", I didn't love school at all. Once, having no choice, I came to teach and stayed. More than once I experienced a very strong desire to leave and do something else in my life. I even had a great opportunity to change my carrier, but anyway I returned to teaching and I'm still there. You may call it destiny, but it is usually our own unconscious choice. Sometimes you don't need to love what you do from the very beginning. Just do it, love will come later.
