My Tips for Teaching

This year I really like teaching my students in Frenkel school. I would like to share with you a few methods and activities that I use with my students. I believe that if my lessons interest me they will interest my students as well. As teachers, we have to find our strength , hobbies and interests and bring them into class. This way the students can feel the connection and passion that their teacher has for the lesson and this might help them want to be more involved. I really like songs and singing. This is why I start every lesson with a song. Before every unit, I look up on YouTube different songs that connect to the vocabulary and topics of the unit. I make up different motions that go with the words and teach them to the students. This takes up the first five minutes of the lesson but helps the students with the skill of speaking. English Music when I was in elementary school, my sister often listened to English songs. We all enjoyed it though I especially loved David Bowie's music. I used to listen to his music at every opportunity that I had and wanted to understand every single word in English that appeared in the songs. I fell in love with the language and started to explore it throughout my childhood. Today, when I teach english, I always tell my pupils to listen and enjoy English songs, to search for words that they don't know and even play the songs again and again and sing along. I am proud to say that they share with me their favorite songs, bring them to class and listem to them during their breaks. I must also remark that my love to music has passed to all my children and they listen to English music on a regular basis. As a result, they all have a wonderful vocabulary, they speak fluently and they spread their love for English music everywhere.

Correcting mistakes. It is important to say I was born and bred in Russia, former USSR, where it was forbidden to teach speaking whatsoever. Since the political situation was complicated to say the least, the country was behind the Iron Curtain thus nobody was allowed to leave it unless there was a good reason for that. So no speaking let alone listening. What we had was a boring textbook, reading, translating and a lot of writing. I acquired all my speaking skills when I started teaching with the Oxford and Cambridge materials, which were authentic and interesting. What I did was do all the students' work myself before I stood up in front of my (adult) audience. Like Roi (as he mentioned in his post), I was scared stiff of making mistakes, but I was not a pupil, I was a teacher. Who was there to correct me? Unlike USSR, Israel, correct me if I'm wrong, is a country where there is a lot of exposure to the English language, we have all sorts of population from all the corn...
